Artist Statement:
I am Sergio Aranda, a Spanish visual artist born in Switzerland and now based in Barcelona. My life has moved through cities such as Geneva, Madrid, and Paris, each leaving its imprint on my artistic language. These urban landscapes—rich with architecture, history, and hidden textures—continue to shape the way I see and create.
My work is deeply influenced by the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, the idea that beauty lives within imperfection, impermanence, and the quiet traces of time. I am drawn to surfaces that carry memory: rusted metal, eroded walls, weathered materials marked by years of transformation. In these signs of decay I find poetry.
Through layered mixed-media techniques—scraping, erosion, chemical reactions, and textured surfaces—I build paintings that feel almost archaeological. Gold sometimes appears beside rust: a dialogue between splendor and corrosion, permanence and fragility. These contrasts echo the rhythms of life itself, where creation and deterioration coexist.
Patterns, worn textures, and irregular surfaces become visual metaphors for the passage of time. My work often sits between urban abstraction and organic transformation, where structure slowly dissolves into something more elemental.
What fascinates me most is how beauty can emerge from deterioration. By embracing corrosion, erosion, and imperfection, my paintings invite the viewer to reconsider what we define as beautiful. They are quiet reflections on time, memory, and the subtle transformations that shape both cities and human experience.
