Artist Statement:
I am a self-taught artist living on an island in Washington state. I have always found creativity to be rewarding. Experimentation with different techniques and mediums has challenged me mentally and has opened my eyes and brain to infinite possibilities. Painting is an essential part of my daily life.
The technique used for my current paintings is called "watercolor batik". My paintings are the result of experimentation with color, shape, light and texture. I paint on rice paper, paying particular attention to patterns of light and dark. The painting is then covered with paraffin wax. After the wax is dry, the work is crumpled and more color is added. This process allows the paint to seep into the cracks. More paraffin is applied and the wax is then removed using heat. Because some of the wax remains in the paper, the painting is durable, somewhat like fabric. The edges are deckled. The result is a boldly colorful, beautifully textured work of art This technique gives a distressed, vintage-like look to my work.
The paintings can be framed with the deckled edges hidden or in a floater frame.
One buyer says of my work "Your paintings make me happy!"
